Bali x Seea

I have taken way to long to get these images up on the blog, but as you know things always get lost in the depths of hard drives. Last August Ashley and I were invited to travel to Indonesia with our good friend @RosieJaffurs. We had just over two weeks to explore Bali, as well as island hop over to Gili Trawangan for a few days. Here are some of my favorite images we captured during our stay. List of gear used is at the bottom of the post. Hope you enjoy!

Gear Used:

Sony A7rii + Aquatech Water Housing

DJI Phantom 3 Professional Drone

Fuji XT10

Hand Shaped

You know you have a pretty cool wife when she can shape her own surfboards. Ash with some help from Devin, hand shaped her first board a few months back. The sad news is that the back yard shaping shack is no more, but at least these photos can show it in its full glory. Here are some images from the glassing process.

New Year. New Gear

Test images with Sony A7rii and an Aquatech water housing.

At the end of 2015 I made a big leap over to the Sony realm and picked up a Sony A7rii. So far, the camera has delivered some amazing images with crazy dynamic range that easily surpasses my quiver of Canon Gear. I was scared to take the leap to Sony lenses so Have been using a Fotodiox adaptor with all my canon glass. The Auto focus is reminiscent of a 5Dmk2, but for most of what I shoot, thats good enough. Not all lenses work but my , Fisheye, 24mm, and 35mm all work great. I pre ordered the new Aquatech A7 Series housing and finally got it in before the holidays. The next few posts will be water shots I've been taking with the gear. It is extremely light weight in the water and the focus has hit the mark most times I need it. Would I compare this set up to a 1dx, absolutely not, but having the ability to switch from APC to full frame in the water, 42mpx with incredible dynamic range, and 4k recording. This camera can pull its weight with the big boys any day. Here are some recent water images I captured with the rig. This session was all shot on the Canon 35mm 1.4 L mk1.

Always good the throw in a solid selfie for good measure. Aloha!

Imperial Motion

One of my fondest trips to date is a job I did for Imperial Motion. I had the privilege to travel up the California coast with my good friend Dave Yearwood. He is a Surf Ambassador for the company and quite a character as well. We got into plenty of trouble along the way, but all in all, we got some epic images. Some of the spots in these images are Oxnard, Big Sur, and San Francisco.

Waiohai

Summer is right around the corner, which means its time for small waves. That doesn't mean that the creativity has to stop. Small days give such opportunity to find new and unique ways to capture water images. Last night we paddled out to Waiohai on the south side of Kauai and tried to capture a few. I shot these with a Canon 1dMk3 + Canon 24mm 1.4 + SPL Splash housing and 8in Dome. This is even wider then the shots in my last post giving more of a chance to capture some over under perspectives. Here are some random shots from last night. Aloha!

Seea x Ashley Johnston

Been super stoked to work with my significant other on her new endeavor as brand ambassador for Seea. They are a swimwear company based in Southern California creating retro surf wear for women. We shot these images on a small day on the south shore. I used my Canon 1dMk3 + Canon 35mm 1.4 + Spl Splash housing and 8in Dome. The large dome gave me a chance to get some extra flare from water spots shown in a few images. These were shot on the South Shore of Kauai in Poipu. Check out some of Ashley's Work @ ashleyjohnstondesign.com
